S «Spinoza: The Velocities of Thought» («Spinoza: Des vitesses de la pensée») was a 14-lecture seminar given by Deleuze at the University of Paris 8 from December 1980 to March 1981. Deleuze had previously published two books on Spinoza, including Expressionism in Philosophy: Spinoza ( Spinoza et le problème de l'expression , 1968), and Spinoza: Practical Philosophy ( Spinoza: Philosophie Gilles Deleuze: Född: 18 januari 1925 Paris: Död: 4 november 1995 (70 år) Paris: Region: Västerländsk filosofi: Skola: Kontinental filosofi, poststrukturalism, materialism, nyspinozism: Intressen: Estetik, västerländsk filosofi, metafilosofi, metafysik: Idéer: Haecceitas, kroppen utan organ, schizoanalys, transcendental empirism: Influenser Perhaps most importantly, Deleuze is able to synthesize expressivity in Spinoza with Leibniz and to show how these two figures successfully launched an anti-Cartesian movement. Although this text has been criticized for allowing too much conceptual work to take place at the level of attribution, I found it to be a remarkably precise exegesis. Expressionism, Deleuze's philosophical commentary on Spinoza, is a critically important work because its conclusions provide the foundations for Deleuze's later metaphysical speculations on the nature of power, the body, difference and singularities. According to the reading of Spinoza that Gilles Deleuze presents in Expressionism in Philosophy: Spinoza, Spinoza's philosophy should not be represented as a moment that can be simply subsumed and sublated within the dialectical progression of the history of philosophy, as it is figured by Hegel in the Science of Logic, but rather should be considered as providing an alternative point of view for the development of a philosophy that overcomes Hegelian idealism.

''Expression'' is, of course, the key Deleuze uses to navigate the work of Benedict de Spinoza in Expressionism in Philosophy (1968), which comprised the minor half of Deleuze's thèse d'état, the major half being Difference and Repetition, published the same year and quickly followed by Logic of Sense in 1969.

This world, we learned, is ‘a continuum in which there are singularities, and it is around these singularities that monads take form as expressive centres’ (EPS 329). Expressionism, Deleuze's philosophical commentary on Spinoza, is a critically important work because its conclusions provide the foundations for Deleuze's later metaphysical speculations on the nature of power, the body, difference and singularities. Ostensibly, Deleuze and Spinoza is a critical reading of Deleuze’s interpretation of Spinoza in his book Expressionism in Philosophy: Spinoza. Deleuze published two books on Spinoza, but this one, although published two years earlier than Spinoza: Practical Philosophy, constitutes Deleuze’s central work on Spinoza.
